What Is a Soft Starter? How It Works & Key Benefits

How Soft Starters Work

Starting an RV air conditioner, marine A/C, or home HVAC system on limited power can be difficult—especially when using a smaller generator or inverter, or a home standby generator during power outages.

A soft starter reduces the sudden inrush of current to the AC compressor during startup and gradually increases it to bring the compressor up to speed. The slower inrush of current reduces stress on the compressor motor, makes operation smoother and more efficient, and extends the lifespan of your air conditioner. A soft starter also reduces breaker trips and eliminates the harsh noise a compressor typically makes when it starts.

These are especially useful for RV owners, boaters, and homeowners relying on backup power or boondocking in remote areas.
